AC charging

What is AC charging?

AC (alternating current) charging for electric vehicles (EVs) is essentially slow charging, often used when charging at home or work.

Electric cars have onboard converters to change AC electricity into DC to be stored in the battery.

Typically, charging speeds are 7.2kW and 22kW, and AC charging provides a slower but more accessible way to recharge EV batteries.

AC chargers should take 4-6 hours (7kW) or 1-2 hours (22kW) to charge an EV with a 40kWh battery.
