Miles Per Gallon (MPG)

Why is mpg important?

In Britain, a car’s fuel consumption is measured in miles per gallon, which is shortened to MPG. Manufacturers have to include this number in all publicity for the model. A car’s official mpg figure will tell you how far it will travel using one UK gallon (4.55 litres) of petrol or diesel. However, this is figure is a guide, rather than an exact figure. Driving at a high speed or in stop-start traffic will lower a car’s mpg, so it will need to refuelled more often and cost more to run.
